Travel Websites Scam - 12/9/06

Travel Websites Scam

A scam has recently come to light, whereby several travel websites have been taking payments for holidays that didn't exist, only to then disappear.

Although there are many advantages of booking a cheap holiday online, you need to be very careful that the website you are booking through belongs to a reputable travel firm.

You should check whether they offer a consumer protection scheme by looking for a logo, such as ABTA or ATOL, on their website, then take a note of their ABTA/ATOL number.

If you go to the ABTA and/or CAA (operator of ATOL) websites, there are facilities for you to check whether they have legitimate bonds with these organisations.

Go to www.abta.co.uk or www.caa.co.uk for further information.

You can of course opt not to book a holiday that offers consumer protection, but in doing so you need to be aware of the risks.
