Shopping around for travel - 28/9/06
Shopping around for travelBuying a holiday is one of the most expensive purchases you make each year and the more research you do and the more you shop around, the better chance you will have of finding the right holiday at the best price.
Of course we are all subject to time pressures these days, but the internet is a great resource and can save you a lot of time.
The first thing to do is to research the companies that offer the type of holiday you are looking for. That's where Travel Websites Directory and the major search engines come in.
If you are simply booking flights and/or accommodation the meta-search sites (otherwise known as price comparison sites) can be a big help, though be aware that they often only search the websites of travel companies with whom they have commercial arrangements, so you might not receive details of every deal. Use as many of the meta-search sites as you can to pick up a range of prices.
If you are booking accommodation, then it may be worth checking out the website of the hotel (if it has one), who sometimes have better prices and more options than the sites they sell through. It can even be worth, particularly if they are UK based, giving them a ring to see what they can do.
If you book direct, particularly if they are overseas, you need to take account of the risks, mainly that you will not be protected in the same way as you may be if you book with a UK based company.
Before booking, it may be worth checking one of the many consumer review sites to see what other guests have said about the hotel concerned.
