Holiday Protection - 5/11/2006
Protecting Yourself When Booking A Holiday
The problem with travel and holidays, is that you often have to pay up front for a service that you don't receive for many months.
It is therefore vitally important that you take steps to protect yourself and your money.
Paying with a credit card often offers cover if the company you have booked with goes bust before you travel. You should check with your credit card company to see whether they cover you.
Many travel companies make a surcharge (normally 1%-2%) when accepting credit card payments, but you may feel it is worth it if your credit card company offers protection.
You should also check whether your booking is protected by a bond, the main schemes being those operated by ABTA and ATOL. These schemes generally cover you if the travel company goes bust before you travel and bring you home if the travel company goes bust while you are away.
With the rise in self-packaging, more and more people are travelling without the protection of a bond and indeed there is debate in the travel industry about the future of bonding.
As always the secret is to check whether your booking is covered by a bond and if not, to be aware of the risks, namely that you could lose your money and/or be left stranded if things go wrong.
